Security

Compliance is not optional. It is foundational.

Security applied across the five areas of the AWS model: identity, detection, infrastructure protection, data protection and incident response.

The context

Cloud security rarely fails because of a sophisticated attack. It fails because of an exposed bucket, a long-lived credential forgotten in a repository, an IAM policy with broad permission granted in a hurry and never reviewed. The work that matters is less about buying tools and more about closing those gaps in a systematic, verifiable way.

AWS organizes security into five areas: identity and access management, detection, infrastructure protection, data protection and incident response. Each area has its own services, and a mature posture covers all of them. Covering three of the five and calling security done is the pattern we find most often when taking over an environment.

The AWS Security Reference Architecture proposes layered defense on top of a multi-account organization, with a Security Tooling account receiving delegated administration of the security services. That centralizes monitoring and guardrails without depending on manual configuration account by account: every new account is born inside the policy.

When this solution applies

If two or more of these scenarios sound familiar, it is worth a conversation.

  • Long-lived access keys are in use by people or applications
  • Nobody can say who holds administrator permission today
  • GuardDuty, Security Hub or Config are turned off, or turned on with nobody watching
  • Personal or sensitive data moves around without classification and without documented encryption
  • There is no written incident response procedure
  • A GDPR/LGPD, ISO 27001, PCI DSS or SOC 2 audit is on the horizon

Benefits

  • Zero Trust
  • Compliance ready
  • Continuous auditing
  • Incident response

Technical stack

AWS services we use

The exact composition depends on your environment and on the requirements identified during the assessment. This is the baseline we work from for this solution.

AWS IAM

Access control to services and resources with least privilege

AWS IAM Identity Center

Federated access with single sign-on, removing long-lived local credentials

Amazon GuardDuty

Continuous threat detection from logs, DNS and network behavior

AWS Security Hub CSPM

Consolidation of findings and assessment against recognized security standards

Amazon Inspector

Continuous vulnerability scanning of workloads and container images

Amazon Detective

Incident investigation with automatic event correlation

AWS CloudTrail

Audit trail of API calls, the basis of any forensic investigation

AWS Config

Configuration recording and compliance evaluation against defined rules

AWS KMS and AWS CloudHSM

Cryptographic key management for data at rest and in transit

Amazon Macie

Discovery and classification of sensitive data stored in Amazon S3

AWS WAF and AWS Network Firewall

Web application protection and network traffic inspection

Amazon EventBridge

Orchestration of automated response driven by security events

Methodology

How we approach it

  1. Current posture assessment

We review the existing configuration across the five security areas and produce an inventory of findings classified by severity and remediation effort.

  2. Identity first

We move to federated access through IAM Identity Center, eliminate long-lived credentials and review policies for least privilege. Identity is the new perimeter.

  3. Detection enabled and monitored

We turn on GuardDuty, Security Hub, Config and Inspector with delegated administration, and define who responds to each type of finding. A tool switched on without an owner is not detection.

  4. Data protection

We classify sensitive data with Macie, apply encryption with keys managed in KMS and review access policies for buckets and databases.

  5. Incident response

We write playbooks per incident type, automate containment where it is safe to do so and exercise the scenarios with your team.

  6. Continuous auditing

We establish a review cadence, compliance reports and tracking of how findings decrease over time.

Deliverables

What you receive

  • Security posture report with findings prioritized by severity
  • Federated access implemented with single sign-on and MFA
  • IAM policy review with least privilege applied
  • Detection services enabled with delegated administration and assigned owners
  • Sensitive data inventory with classification and encryption policy
  • Incident response playbooks per scenario
  • Compliance dashboard against the standards that apply to your industry
  • Evidence organized for data protection audits and certifications
Indicators

What we measure

Open critical findings

Downward trend of high and critical severity findings in Security Hub

Long-lived credentials

Number of remaining static access keys, with zero as the target

Detection coverage

Share of accounts and regions with detection services active

Incident response time

Interval between detection and effective containment
